Find a stock one, these depreciate pretty nicely so you can get a nice one for pretty cheap. The S63 really isn’t all that crazy, many people are daily driving their C63’s to 70k+ without any huge problem. My Indy is a Euro guy and bought one with a fucked suspension for really cheap, fixed it up and now it's his daily driver. I posted a picture of it way back.

This gen. S Class is my favourite, so of course I’d say this is the right choice.

and 2: its britsh...i intend on using this as a daily bike, a sportsbike, and some light touring (1000 miles twice a year for school)

and british reliability is...eehhhhhhh

Get rid of those wheels and I bet you'll have a keeper. While the engine is a beast, it really isn't all that exotic, and it's been in use for a while so you should be good.

Not for the head bolts. When they go the head gasket will leak coolant into the oil. There is an updated part and they can be replaced one at a time without having to remove the heads. Saves a lot of money in parts and labor.

Cams and adjusters make noise when they start going bad. The cam lobes wear out and tick, rather loudly at times. Adjusters make a similar noise but rarely cause any problems other than annoyance.

Cams have to come out to replace head bolts and can be inspected/replaced then without any extra labor.

so would a light ticking similar to what is heard on many imports deemed to be “injector tick” normal for these engines?

When I looked over this one no noise could be heard from the outside when running, a very light tick was heard while running with the hood open. It was also a little light on coolant.

I pulled the oil cap to check for signs of sludge, there were none, and the oil I could see looked like used oil, not coffee milk like it gets when the head gasket is blown. I didn’t check the dip stick or the coolant reservoir, but I will check both for signs of mixtures.

As always, I appreciate your info and assistance.

Potentially, though not necessarily. Their injectors can be easily heard. When the cams are worn they’re typically loud and a bit deeper in tone than an injector tick.

When the head bolts go it’s all or nothing, so to speak, so a little light on coolant isn’t really a head bolt indicator.

Other than those issues these are very tough engines and only very rarely suffer from any other major issues. Sludge is not something I’ve seen on one of these, even from excessive intervals (but I haven’t seen anyone go more than about 15-18k between services).

Happy to help. Shoot me the VIN if you want, I will try to remember to check it’s dealer service history, maybe someone has already done those repairs.

A neighbor of mine bought a 2008 S500 W221 used in 2011, and unlike the W220 2004 S500 he used to own, it’s actually been reliable. They ditched the overly complicated and hideously expensive to fix ABC hydraulic suspension for a more simpler Airmatic setup (Standard air suspension) as well as upping the quality of components used in the construction of the vehicle. Apart from changing tires, and regular service intervals. Nothing has broken apart and everything still works, including the seat massage function as well as the radar guided cruise control or DISTRONIC. He recently sold it for a brand new W222 S400 Hybrid.

No head bolts, cams or adjusters, but otherwise excellent history. Intake gaskets, fuel pumps, ABC pulsation dampers, lots of full services, many of which were early, and the list goes on for about ten pages. The only other thing I didn’t see was transmission service, which should be done every 40k. It was under warranty until 4/30/2014 so almost anything it needed was done.

So... If the head bolts need replaced, and the vehicle has begun leaking or burning coolant, should the head gasket be replaced?

I don’t know for certain that this is happening, but I got the dreaded low coolant message, I checked, it’s not very low, only a few oz, so I’m going to top it off and keep an eye.

If it is a concern and I need to swap the bolts, just the bolts, I’m okay with that, but if its one of those, pull the motor and rebuild concerns, I’m just going to get rid of this one.

Kinja'd!!! AMGtech - now with more recalls! > CAR_IS_MI

If the bolts are just starting to go and the head gasket isn’t leaking then you can do just the bolts without removing the heads, one bolt at a time. When they go it’s typically all or nothing and then you have 20qts of chocolate milkshake in the engine. I haven’t seen one cause a complete rebuild.

If the bolts have failed and you have a Dairy Queen trying to open up shop in your engine then the head gaskets will need to be replaced. But this does not require engine removal or a rebuild. The labor is about double compared to just doing the bolts. A lot of people do just the bolts preventatively.

A quick coming system pressure test and oil level/quality check should tell you pretty quickly what you’re dealing with. Hopefully it’s something simple.

How are you enjoying it otherwise?

Yeah I checked the oil level and mixture immediately no signs of coolant in the oil, no dq , no signs of leak at the head, at least on the outside (can’t see under the intake) no I erase in oil level.

Otherwise loving the car, contemplating keeping it longterm and doing some weistec upgrades

Awesome. Sounds like you should be ok, at least for now.

Nice. I’m glad you’re liking it. If you decide to do headers down the road don’t cheap out and get ones without oxygen sensor bungs or run without O2's (yes, some people do this). Good never comes of it.
